Peak-performing nonprofit boards cultivate more effective nonprofits that are better able to serve their constituents. The Nonprofit Leadership Institute (NLI) is a premier resource center for nonprofit boards.
Founded in 1996 at the request of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s foundation community, the NLI is dedicated to providing leadership development, resources, training, best practices and other information in support of peak-performing boards. Areas of expertise include mission and vision, planning, board/CEO relations, fundraising, board structure and development, board evaluation, and legal issues. Our Mission: To inspire excellence in nonprofit leadership.
To date, we’ve enjoyed serving more than 4200 clients from over 750 nonprofit organizations who have attended NLI academies, training sessions and other programs. Nonprofit organizations served include libraries, associations, agencies in education, social services, arts and culture, health and economic development agencies. New, veteran and prospective board members, as well as executive directors and staff, benefit from participation in NLI activities by learning and acting upon the principles of dynamic board leadership.
The NLI is generously supported by Duquesne University, by grants from local foundations, sponsorships from corporations, and by registration fees from program participants. Now celebrating its 13th year of service, the NLI is a program of Duquesne University’s School of Leadership and Professional Advancement. Brochure (PDF)

If you are an employer who is interested in engaging your employees in the community in a meaningful way, please contact Boards-by-Design for more information about how your company can participate. If you are an individual who is interested in serving on a board you can also contact us for more information about ways to work with Boards-by-Design to find a great nonprofit board on which to serve.
